A dentist from east Jerusalem was arrested on Thursday for social media posts praising Hamas and inciting violence, Israel Police announced.

Police began their investigation after the suspect made a post on social media featuring the slogan “This is jihad – victory or martyrdom.” Over the course of their investigation, they discovered other materials supporting terrorism and inciting violence, shared by the suspect on social media or saved on his mobile phone.

The suspect, age 45, was arrested by police detectives on Thursday and brought to the station. He was then taken to the Magistrate’s Court in Jerusalem on Friday, where his detention was extended until January 12 for continued investigation.

“The shocking reports about the doctor who was arrested today after identifying with and expressing support for terrorism are a painful reminder of a reality that we must not accept,” Knesset Health Committee chair Limor Son Har-Melech stated about the arrest.

“Unfortunately, this is not a new phenomenon or isolated cases, but a deep blemish that has infiltrated our health care system under the cover of silence and inclusion.”

Har-Melech said that she convened a discussion on doctors within the Israeli health system who support terrorism.

“We will demand clear answers: how did we reach this situation, and how does the State of Israel intend to act to permanently remove anyone who undermines our existence?”
