Florida Highway Patrol arrests 1 on drug and gun charges

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WALA) – The Florida Highway Patrol said they arrested a man during a traffic stop after finding drugs and a gun in his vehicle.

FHP said they were conducting speed enforcement in the area of Pine Forest Road and Nature Lane when they observed a vehicle travelling 60 MPH in a 45 MPH zone.

Troopers initiated a traffic stop and the driver stated he had a firearm and marijuana in the vehicle, according to authorities.

Officials said the driver exited the vehicle and troopers removed a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine from his waistband.

During a search of the vehicle, troopers discovered a book bag with 98 grams of marijuana, a scale, baggies, and rolling paper, according to FHP.

Authorities said the driver had a large amount of cash in small denominations on him.

Troopers conducted a DUI investigation and placed the driver under arrest.

Kordell Johnson, 28, was arrested and charged with a weapons offense, DUI, two drug charges, and a traffic violation, according to jail records.
