CHAPMAN, Kan. (WIBW) – Four people — including two young children — were taken to an area hospital after the vehicle they were in hit a deer Monday night on Interstate 70 in Dickinson County, officials said.
The rollover crash was reported at 9:45 p.m. Monday about a mile east of Chapman on I-70.
The Kansas Highway Patrol’s online crash log reported that a 2021 Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle was westbound on I-70 when a deer entered the roadway from the median.
The Chevrolet struck the deer, causing the SUV to exit the westbound lanes to the south before re-entering the roadway in the eastbound lanes and again exiting the roadway to the south.
Upon entering the southern ditch of eastbound I-70, the Chevrolet rolled several times before striking a fence. The vehicle then came to rest in a field on the south side of I-70.
All four occupants of the Ford were transported to a Junction City hospital with suspected minor injuries.
They were identified as Trisha M. Wanuku, 39, the driver; and passengers Samuel W. Wanuku, 36, Zale Wanuku, 2, and Zion Wanuku, 2, all of Kansas City, Missouri. The patrol said all of the Chevrolet’s occupants were wearing their safety restraints.
