MARION, Iowa — A Marion 18-year-old was shot and killed after advanced on police officers with a machete Wednesday morning, Marion Police Department says.
In a new press release Wednesday afternoon, investigators say the teen asked a neighbor to call police because he wanted to speak to an officer. Two officers arrived on scene in the 4100 block of Deer Valley Drive a little before 8 a.m.
Police say the teen talked with officers for three minutes, without identifying why he wanted to talk to officers, but then pulled out a machete and advanced on them.
Authorities say they told him to drop the weapon and then used a taser, but that did not slow him down.
Marion PD says the officers again told him to drop the machete before firing on him once.
Officers say he resisted as officers placed him into custody but then become unresponsive. Police say they performed CPR but teen died at the hospital.
