The Aircraft
The aircraft involved was a 31-year-old Beech 1900D, registered HK-4709 and serial UE-140. It was delivered to SATENA in May 2010.
It first flew in February 1995 and was delivered new to Mesa Airlines (YV) in April of the same year as N140ZV in US Airways Express colours.
It was then sold to American commuter airline Big Sky Airlines (GQ) in August 2005, flying for the carrier until it ceased operations in 2008, after which N140ZV found its new home in Colombia with SATENA.
The 1900D has a capacity for 19 passengers in a 1-1 layout and is powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67D turboprop engines.
A total of 695 1900s were built in Wichita, Kansas, from 1982 to 2002. Its design is derived from the popular King Air utility twin.
