TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – A tragic multi-vehicle collision on January 2 has resulted in the death of a 4-year-old boy and left several others with serious injuries.

According to a press release, the crash occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. on the 5300 block of East Golf Links Road. A Toyota Corolla, driven by a 27-year-old woman, crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding with a Toyota Camry and a Volkswagen Jetta.

According to the Tucson Police Department, the Corolla driver and her four children were taken to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Sadly, the 4-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The Camry’s driver and passenger sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the Jetta’s driver suffered minor injuries.

Investigators believe that the occupants of the Corolla were not properly restrained, contributing to the severity of the injuries. The driver of the Corolla was found to be impaired, and impairment, along with failure to control speed, are considered primary factors in the crash.

Detectives are still investigating the cause behind the Corolla’s sudden lane change, and felony charges are pending against the driver, who is in life-threatening condition. The investigation remains ongoing.
