WILMINGTON, Del. – The Delaware State Police have confirmed an active shooter situation at the Wilmington Division of Motor Vehicles on Tuesday that claimed the life of a Delaware State Trooper and injured multiple others.

Police initially announced there was a shooter at the DMV on Hessler Boulevard at about 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 23.

Just before 2:45 p.m., DSP said there was no longer an active shooter and one person was in custody. Gov. Matt Meyer has since announced the shooter has been confirmed dead.

“We are closely monitoring the situation at the DMV in New Castle, and I want to be clear that there is no active threat to the public at this time,” Meyer said Tuesday afternoon. “Law enforcement acted swiftly to secure the scene, and the shooter has been confirmed deceased. State and local law enforcement are on the scene and coordinating response efforts. Please avoid the area and follow guidance from authorities. We will share updates as they are confirmed.”

At about 3:40 p.m., Delaware State Police confirmed a trooper had been killed during the incident.

On Wednesday, Delaware State Police identified the trooper as Corporal Grade One Matthew T. “Ty” Snook. Snook, from Hockessin, was 34 and a 10 year veteran of the Delaware State Police.

“A native Delawarean, Ty was a graduate of Saint Mark’s High School and the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the wrestling team,” DSP wrote of the fallen trooper. “He was a respected colleague, a trusted partner, and a beloved member of both the Delaware State Police and the community he served.”

Snook is survived by his wife and one-year-old daughter.

A second state trooper was also evaluated for a minor, non-gunshot-related injury and was not transported to EMS, according to DSP. A 40-year-old woman was taken to a nearby hospital for minor, non-gunshot-related injuries, and another 35-year-old woman was evaluated for shortness of breath at the scene but declined to be transported.

The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles announced the Wilmington location was closed on Tuesday until further notice. Just before 3 p.m., the DMV announced all DMV locations were closed.

“I have been briefed on the tragic shooting at the Wilmington DMV,” U.S. Congresswoman Sarah McBride said on Tuesday afternoon. “I am praying for all of those impacted, including our brave law enforcement officers. I continue to be in touch with state officials as we all gain more information.”

“I am heartbroken by today’s shooting at the Wilmington DMV that took the life of a Delaware State Trooper just two days before Christmas,” U.S. Sen. Chris Coons said in a statement Tuesday evening. “This officer put on their uniform this morning and went to work to make our community safer. Now, they will never come home. This is devastating for their family, their fellow officers, and our entire state. Our law enforcement community is a strong one – knit together through courage and determination to serve. I’m grateful for their brave actions today that likely saved lives.”

Governor Matt Meyer, First Lady Lauren Meyer, Lieutenant Governor Kyle Evans Gay, and Second Gentleman Olin Gay issued a joint statement Tuesday evening, saying “Today, we mourn the loss of a Delaware State Trooper who gave his life in the line of duty. He made the ultimate sacrifice to protect his fellow Delawareans, and our hearts are broken for his family. We are praying for them, their loved ones, and every state trooper as they grieve this sudden and unimaginable loss. Protecting the lives and livelihoods of Delawareans is our most fundamental responsibility, and moments like this underscore both the risks our first responders take and the courage they show every day. We are deeply grateful to the state and local law enforcement officers and emergency personnel whose professionalism and quick action helped prevent further harm.”

The Delaware Secretary of Transportation says all four Delaware DMV locations will be closed Wednesday while they mourn the fallen officer and help employees start to process the tragedy.

DSP announced on Dec. 24 that out of respect for Snook, they have decided to delay any announcements regarding the suspected gunman until Friday, Dec. 26.
