NORWAY, S.C. — Authorities say one person has been found dead after an early morning fire in Norway.

Orangeburg County Fire District Chief Teddy Wolfe said several fire departments responded to a Harrison Avenue address in Norway around 6:50 a.m. and were warned that someone may be trapped inside the home.

Arriving firefighters found a wood-frame home already burning heavily and began attempting to put out the flames as crews began searching the inside to see if anyone was inside. That’s when Wolfe said they found the victim. Wolfe said one firefighter also received what appear to be minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, but has since been released.

The fire is now under investigation by the fire district, the South Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). About seven departments responded to the fire.

The chief urged residents to make sure they have a working smoke alarm and also use extra caution during the cold winter months when using space heaters, keeping them at least three feet away from any objects while in use.

He also said residents of the county can contact the Orangeburg County Fire Marshal’s Office for information on getting free smoke detectors.
